Mental Health Care Plans (MHCP) FAQs

(Also known as mental health treatment plan)

A mental health care plan is a support plan document prepared by a general practitioner for someone who is going through mental health issues. If a doctor agrees that you need additional support, you and the doctor will make the treatment plan together, which may include referral to a mental health expert like a psychologist. With a valid MHCP and referral letter, Medicare offers rebates for 20 individual psychology sessions within a year. This means you can claim back between $90 - $133 per session (depending on your psychologists specialisation).

An MHCP is helpful for setting treatment goals with your doctor, and may include psychology sessions or medication. It's great for offering affordable care through rebates on your psychology appointments. Alternatively, you can book in with a counsellor for a $65 flat rate or with a psychologist for $150.
  • Psychologist appointments: From $60.35 out-of-pocket. The MHCP Medicare rebate for a registered psychologist appointment is $93.35, meaning you will pay $150 outright and claim back $93.35 after the appointment.
  • Counsellor appointments: $65
You can obtain an MHCP by booking a video consultation with the Mosh platform GP or with your own local GP. You can book a shorter appointment by completing the online questionnaire first, which will provide your doctor with details of your medical history and concerns. Alternatively, you can book in directly and have a longer initial video consultation.

If you already have a MHCP from your local GP, you can upload it within 48 hours to claim back through Medicare. Medicare rebates are not available for counsellor appointments. You can also email your plan to [email protected].

Not everyone is eligible for a Mental Health Care Plan via telehealth. If your doctor determines this is the case for you, you can still book a therapy session without a MHCP, or Mosh can recommend an in-person option.
