Vaping and Erectile Dysfunction: What You Need to Know
Research published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that men who vape daily face significantly higher odds of erectile dysfunction compared to non-users [1]. Dr. Omar El Shahawy's research demonstrated that daily e-cigarette use doubled the risk of experiencing erectile dysfunction, even among those with no prior cigarette smoking history.
The relationship between vaping and erectile dysfunction appears to persist regardless of one's smoking history, suggesting that e-cigarette vaping may be associated with sexual dysfunction through multiple mechanisms. For men with existing cardiovascular conditions, the risk of erectile dysfunction was found to be even more pronounced - more than triple that of non-vapers.
Dr. Omar El Shahawy, the study found, “Our analysis accounted for the cigarette smoking history of participants, including those who were never cigarette smokers to begin with. It is possible that daily e-cigarette vaping may be associated with higher odds of erectile dysfunction regardless of one’s smoking history.”
“We excluded people with high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease, which is a big reason for ED, and we excluded those with a history of smoking,” added Dr. Shahawy.
“We adjusted for all that and still we found a very strong and significant association between vaping and ED.
“For men who had some history of heart issues, there was more than three times the risk for erectile dysfunction.”
